New website for The Music Network
March 28, 2008
The Music Network has a new website. It’s not all finished yet but after a few hours of ranting and raving and cursing Brian who designed the template, the site is looking a lot better. Brian is actually all right after all, In fact I recommend his work. Let me know if you have any better ideas or suggestions. Stay tuned, cheers Brian, there’s more to follow…..

Digital Central bids farewell
March 24, 2008
Anthony Hughes has been a regular face at Music Network Meetings and has worked hard to bring the workings of Digital Central to the table enabling members of the local Music Community to interact, inform strategy and decision making. Thanks to Anthony, Digital Central picked up the bill for teas and coffees at the meetings and thanks to Anthony, when Digital Central closes the Musicians Union will be stepping in to pick up the tab so you can rest assured, teas and coffees will continue to be made available to you all at future meetings.
Anthony has been committed to ensuring that Digital Central has been available at Network meetings to listen to and interact with discussions that have shaped the way people perceive and work within the Midlands based music Industry over the past couple of years. Anthony will be at the next Network Meeting as he rarely misses the opportunity to get a free coffee and chocolate biscuits. Come and find him if you want to know more, he has sent us a message from the frontline and here it is to read for yourself.
“Friends, Romans, Sound engineers…
Dear All, For those of you who don’t know, the Digital Central project is drawing to a close. The last date of my contract and the project is 31st March and I have been informed that the department who contract managed Digital Central for the University no longer wishes to pursue this kind of project.
For the last two years I have worked towards my key objectives I set out at the start of my contract. I have aimed to finally bring together a dialogue between the regions music industry education and the regional development initiatives, providing the music industry with an equal voice at the table of such policy and funding opportunities. Mostly I have managed to achieved this.
I am pleased with the successes I have made and those who I managed to offer support to, whether that be direct funding, support service, in kind support or my time and energy.

Stanley Brinks at The Jug of Ale, Moseley, Birmingham March 14th 2008
March 14, 2008
step forward the now Berlin-based Stanley Brinks. New single ‘Fox Trot’ is dark and broody, lurching forward like the pissed fall guy in a 1950s crime caper; Brinks’ lyrics are exquisite, slowly painting his story with effortless flamboyance (“My father was a doctor but he played the guitar/On the day that you are born you know who you are”). He states his intentions: “The only thing I learnt was what no-one said to me/You better live now and stop getting ready.” The results could prove intriguing.”
Stanley Brinks Tour and gig at The Jug of Ale, Moseley, Birmingham March 14th 2008
March 14, 2008
The Catapult Club, Iron Man Records and The Music Network bring you:
Stanley Brinks at The Jug of Ale, Moseley, Birmingham on march 14th 2008.
(aka Andre herman Dune) Tickets will be £7 on the door or £5 in advance. Doors 8pm.
Stanley Brinks is the new identity of André Herman Düne, original member of the “Herman Düne” trio. He also recorded and played shows in Europe, the UK and the US under various other names: Ben Dope, Ben Haschish, Klaus Bong, John Trawling, John Andreas, Lord Stanislas… Now based in Berlin, he’s mostly recording and playing as a solo act.

Review: “Having toured and recorded all over under different guises ranging from Ben Dope to Klaus Bong to John Andreas, this former member of the French anti-Folk Herman Dune trio has done it again: step forward the now Berlin-based Stanley Brinks. He states his intentions: “The only thing I learnt was what no-one said to me/You better live now and stop getting ready.” The results could prove intriguing.”

proposals to extend copyright for sound recordings from 50 to 95 years
March 9, 2008
In case anyone thought performing artists were also the music business or part of it……Here’s an email from PPL
I just wanted to alert you to some good news in our campaign on copyright term. The Commission has this morning announced proposals to extend copyright for sound recordings from 50 to 95 years. Making the announcement, Commissioner Charlie McCreevy said he no longer wanted performing artists to be the poor cousins of the music business.
Ticket Touting: Going, Going, Gone…?
March 7, 2008
From our man Peter Jenkinson: For as long as there have been restrictions on how many people can enjoy popular public performances, there have been individuals looking to make a quick buck from the disparity between supply and demand. The advent of the internet has however made it easier than ever before for third parties to derive huge profits from the resale of popular concert tickets, with concerns regarding consumer protection and the need for industry remuneration placing this issue firmly on the agenda for ’08.
Arriving hot on the heels of the government’s forthcoming response to January’s select committee report, this think tank will explore the conflicting viewpoints of managers, resale agents, promoters and the general public, asking whether effective self-regulation is desirable or even plausible in the murky world of secondary ticketing?

A DIGITAL AND CREATIVE INDUSTRIES ACTION PLAN
March 6, 2008
Here’s a message from our friend Peter Jenkinson, some of you know him, some of you may have no idea who he is. During 2007, CIDS commissioned research into the creative industries in Greater Manchester. This was undertaken by Manchester Enterprises and included questionnaires and one to one consultations with a selection of companies. In September, CIDS hosted some consultation sessions to give feedback on the outcomes. Attached are the summaries. The Music Network would like to hear your comments and opinions. Some of the points identified may or may not be applicable to the Midlands region. Perhaps we could start some discussions?
