The Music Network is open to all on Thursday 25th March 2010 4pm til 6pm at Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham, B4 7XG. The Meeting will be lead this month by Andy Derrick

The Music Network organises a NETWORKING EVENT on the last Thursday of each month, for the benefit of music related businesses in the West Midlands region. If you have any involvement in music, come and talk about what you’re up to and meet some new people.These Networking events are about all things music in the region. They’re about helping you to teach yourself how to do it, by yourself, for yourself and encourages you to share the knowledge with others so they can do the same.  If you are a musician, work with musicians, represent musicians, have involvement with the music industry, or are looking to make new contacts the meeting will be useful.

If you have news to report, a presentation to give, an event to promote, any new points for discussion, a pitch to make, business cards or flyers to hand round, an appeal for help, advice or guidance or even if you just want the free tea and biscuits and some quality entertainment…you are invited.

You can also post in by email any news or gig dates or press release information for inclusion on the website and for distribution through the mailing list and RSS feed. More details on the website.

Andy Derrick is an independent freelance musician based in Birmingham, UK.  Andy used to work for the Musicians’ Union delivering front line services and advice to musicians of all genres, experience and backgrounds.

Andy’s main work is as a trombonist in many groups playing Jazz, big band, classical and other kinds of music.  He has also worked in studios as a session musician providing horn tracks for writers and composers.

Since 1992 Andy has written and arranged music and he currently has works published by Warwick Music and Andek Music.

Teaching jazz, trombone and music theory is also a passion that sees Andy working with pupils of all ages and standards across the Midlands.

Acoustic Anglo-Americana at the Boat Inn, Monday 15th March 2010 CV21 1HN

The spotlight is on the authentic sound of Americana on Monday (15th March) at The Boat Inn on Main Street, Newbold-on-Avon, near Rugby.

The fabulous all-star line-up of Three Dollar Tag are this month’s special guests for resident ‘Anglo-Americana’ trio BorderLine Crossing (Chele Willow, Pete Willow and Dave Cook) in what promises to be another great evening of music.

Three Dollar Tag consists of four well-known Warwickshire musicians: singer and guitarist Howard Lincoln, acoustic and electric guitarist Pete Jackson, dobro and banjo-player Bob Powell and fiddle maestro Mick Shaler.

Together they present the sound of small town America having a good time. According to their blurb the band’s unusual name is Americana for ‘the real thing’ and they describe themselves as ‘just four guys having as much fun as you can have in public with the lights on!’

The music starts around 8.30pm and admission is free – but bring some change for the raffle and guest collection! Set your satnavs to CV21 1HN.

Special guest for next month’s session on Monday April 19th is the wonderful Napton-based singer-songwriter, Thom Kirkpatrick.

Borderline Crossing: An evening of acoustic, folk & blues on 3rd Monday each month at Boat Inn, Newbold-on-Avon, Rugby

A fantastic evening of acoustic, folk and blues music is lined up on the 3rd Monday of each month at The Boat Inn, Newbold-on-Avon, near Rugby.

This Monday (15th February) will see more first-class acoustic, folk and blues music lined up.

Resident trio BorderLine Crossing (Chele Willow, Pete Willow and Dave Cook) present a special guest each month. In January the amazing singer-songwriter Rob Halligan played and this month’s special guest is the superb electric fiddle-player Joe O’Donnell with a unique ‘unplugged’ format of his band Shkayla.

Born in Limerick and now based in Coventry, Joe has rocked the Irish and UK music scene since the 70s, not least through his work with East Of Eden, Terry and Gay Woods and the guitar legend Rory Gallagher.

Named after the Gaelic word for ‘stories’, his Celtic fusion band, Shkayla recently released its long-awaited album, Celtic Cargo which has picked up stunning reviews from Europe’s top music publications for its powerful rock and funk rhythms and arrangements of songs and tunes from Ireland, Scotland and Brittany.

Monday’s line-up will feature Shkayla’s versatile keyboards-player Martin Barter and Coventry guitarist Si Hayden who enjoys a huge reputation in his own right for his impressive fingerpick and flamenco-style playing.

I didn’t know O’Donnell’s music before and I was amazed by the splendid mix of folk, rock and jazz, that distinguishes the album. These guys have developed an awe-inspiring sound and they managed to put these old tunes and songs in a fresh and airy dress. Folk World magazine, Germany

Rob Halligan: Regarded as one of the finest unsigned performers on the scene, Rob’s latest album, Best Thing That’s Happened was produced by Wet Wet Wet’s Graeme Duffin and Sandy Jones.In the late 1990s Rob was playing indie-pop-rock with his band, Goldsmiths. His life took a new direction after the death of his father during the 9/11 attack and this would be evident in his writing. His songs challenge faith, politics and complacency and are delivered with a rough spirituality, brutal honesty and tested to be true.

‘Dancing With Seagulls’ was Rob’s first solo project, produced by Simon Goodall (Cliff Richard) and widely praised in the folk and rock press. Radio 2 presenter, Paul Gambaccini, commented, “These are some of the strongest songs I’ve heard for a while”. The album had airplay on BBC1 TV, BBC Radio 2, and a host of local TV and radio stations.

Rob has now played at some of the finest acoustic venues and festivals in the UK including the MAC in Birmingham, The Norwich Arts Centre and The Lot in Edinburgh. He has twice headlined at the Godiva Festival and played the Acoustic Festival of Britain. He also sings with 1980s hit makers After The Fire and often tours with the acclaimed singer and guitaristGareth Davies-Jones.

WHITE NOISE FESTIVAL – 27 & 28 of MARCH 2009 Birmingham

So, 2009 is going to be the year of the great depression-recession, well this won’t ‘stop the music’ because its a well known fact that ‘nobody can stop the music’, and White Noise will be one of the first festivals to kick off the bleakest 12 months of your life so far???.

The White Noise Electronic Music Festival. 2 Days of cutting edge electronic music from Krautrock to car alarm techno, Dub Folk-Moogtastic mayhem. Theremins galore- glam-tronic- electro-billy lunacy.

Pick yourself up, dust yourself down, and haul yourself out. Beg, borrow or turn the sofa upside down and get yourself a ticket. If you’re not from Brum there’s great/cheap hostels we can recommend too, all close to the venue so you can just stumble home in the early hours.

The White Noise Festival 2009 will be held at The Rainbow, Digbeth, Birmingham on the 27th & 28th of March 2009, featuring an international line up of music with 12 bands and 7 djs battling it out in this unique Victorian boozer in Birmingham?s regenerated arts quarter.

This intimate space, boasting a smokers courtyard, has recently enjoyed accolades from The Guardain and The Independant and regular features in The Metro newspaper.

Battle commences at 7pm each night and runs through to 4am each morning. Tickets are priced £10 for a day ticket or £20 for a 2 day pass (plus £1.50 booking fee.)
