Have your say on arrangements for touring professionals and artists in the EU

On Monday 8 February 2021, MPs will discuss a petition relating to arrangements for touring professionals and artists in the EU and will put questions to a Government Minister.

The petition, titled ‘Seek Europe-wide Visa-free work permit for Touring professionals and Artists’, has more than 280,000 signatures as of 29 January. Please consider signing it if you haven’t already done so.

Your responses to this survey will help MPs to understand the issues musicians, artists and other touring professionals are facing and inform what questions they ask the Government. A summary of survey responses will be published on the Parliament website and shared with other MPs taking part in the session. The session will be broadcast and live streamed. What MPs say may be reported in the press and appear on the news, so please don’t share any personal information that you don’t want to be public.

Caroline Dinenage MP, Minister for Digital and Culture, will respond for the Government.

Ahead of the session, the Committee has written to the Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden MP to ask for clarity on the Government’s negotiations with the EU regarding arrangements for visa-free travel for musicians, in light of recent press reports.

The session comes as sittings in Westminster Hall, the traditional debating Chamber for e-petitions, are suspended and the Government has said it currently has no plans to enable virtual participation. The session will allow petitioners’ concerns to be debated by MPs, including those who are shielding, and will be broadcast live on Parliament TV. The Committee held two similar sessions during the closure of Westminster Hall last year, and has scheduled a further such session on a petition relating to Stamp Duty Land Tax relief for Monday 1 February.

The 90-minute virtual sessions will be open to Members from across the House, including those who are self-isolating or shielding. The sessions will be broadcast live on parliamentlive.tv and on YouTube, and a transcript of each session will be published.

“As these petitions demonstrate, there are important issues affecting hundreds of thousands of people that are being missed. Their calls for help and support must be heard.”

A new Birmingham venue and ‘vinyl bar’ will open its doors to music fans this weekend with a huge four-day launch featuring 45 bands, musicians, artists and DJs from across Birmingham and the Midlands.

Dead Wax Digbeth hosts a series of specially curated free events running across its three spaces from Thursday 28 November to Sunday 1 December – including two all-dayers, late-night DJ sets, rare live performances and acoustic sets.

Some of Birmingham’s hottest live acts, including Swampmeat Family Band, Brain Food, Violet, RISCAS, The Empty Page and Wax Futures will take to the stages at the 120/230/100-capacity multi-room venue, formerly punk, rock, metal and alternative haunt The Wagon & Horses in the city’s creative quarter of Digbeth.

Fully transformed by Brighton’s Laine Pub Co, Dead Wax Digbeth features a renovated and expanded building incorporating live music spaces both upstairs (120 capacity) and outside in the ‘Duck Bath’ yard (230 capacity).

The main bar area (100 capacity) will present a craft beer offering from Beavertown and Laine Brew Co. alongside guest draft lines from local breweries including Dig Brew Co, plus a Dead Wax Pizza menu with fresh carnivore, vegetarian and vegan choices overseen by city food tastemaker Anthony Duffy.

Music fans and vinyl lovers will be encouraged to choose and play albums and singles from the bar’s large 4000 record collection as well as enjoy vinyl-only sets from a diverse line-up of DJs in a bright and vibrant setting in the heart of Digbeth designed and created by local artists.

A mural, curated by in-demand street artist Gent48 featuring influential Birmingham bands, musicians and DJs including Big Bear Records, Birmingham Promoters, Catapult Club, Chicks Dig Jerks, ColdRice, Die Das Der, Distorted Tapes, Iron Man Records, Punch Records, This Is Tmrw, and Sweat amongst others will complete the visual identity for this latest addition to the city’s live music landscape.

The launch comes as good news in light of a number of concerns around Birmingham’s music and pub mainstays with city-centre venues including The Flapper, Scruffy Murphy’s and the Eagle and Tun all under threat from closure due to redevelopment.

Leading city live music bookers Birmingham Promoters, KILLER WAVE, Sonic Gun, and DIE DAS DER have all leant their industry expertise and support to the new venture, managed by former Sunflower Lounge boss and recording artist Ben Drummond.

Speaking ahead of the opening, Drummond said, “Its an incredibly challenging time for venues and bars in the city and across the UK so we’re doubly thrilled to be bringing Dead Wax Digbeth to life this week with a team that has worked very hard to create a very special offering. We’re hugely grateful to all of the local creatives who’ve helped us put together a full and exciting launch weekend programme and we look forward to contributing to the city’s cultural fabric, live music offering and UK touring map over the coming months and years.”

20 DJs from a number of well-known city music brands will take part in the opening weekend, including Cherry Bomb, Distorted Tapes, Kaleidoscope, Night Owl, Sweat Club, and Takin’ Care of Business, whilst the live billing boasts 25 live acts drawn from Birmingham and the Midlands’ flourishing indie, psych, art-rock, acoustic, rhythm and blues, heavy, punk, soul, math and pop scenes.

National Children’s Remembrance Concert, Genting Arena, Birmingham, November 3rd 2018 to mark 100th anniversary of the end of the first World War.

More than 2500 children will be performing in the first ever National Children’s Remembrance Concert at the Genting Arena in Birmingham on November 3rd 2018 to mark the 100th anniversary of the ending of the first World War.

Children from across the country will perform music, song and drama to commemorate and remember the tens of millions of civilians and combatants from across the world who died in that war including an estimated 540,000 children. The concert will pay homage to the women and non-combatants, and the many millions of animals that were killed in the conflict including nearly eight million horses and mules. Large screens will be used throughout.

There will be a choir of over 2000 children dressed so as to represent two giant poppies and an orchestra of 180 Young Musicians made up of members of the Birmingham Schools’ and Ealing Youth Orchestras.

The music, songs and associated images have been carefully selected and sequenced to tell the story of the war so as to extend factual knowledge and understanding of the war and to enhance empathy for all who were affected by it and its consequences. There will be moments of joy and moments of sadness, of emotion and reflection, of pathos and hope, and of remembrance and gratitude. It will be a concert for all and which commemorates and remembers all.

Concert Director and Founder Ron Dawson said:

“If the spirit and duty of remembrance is to endure it must be passed from generation to generation. The ambition of this children’s centenary concert is to renew that remembrance and our gratitude to those who lived, fought and died in that war a century ago.

It is important to remember all of those who were affected by World War I, whether they were combatants from anywhere in the world, their families, their children or their friends and neighbours. I hope this concert will change the way we commemorate remembrance forever and inspire an interest and understanding of remembrance in the next generation.

Whilst Remembrance Day has continued year upon year, the hope that the war would bring an end to all wars has still to be realised. If that hope is ever to be fulfilled it must be planted and nurtured within the hearts of everyone, but most importantly within the hearts of today’s children.”

Music will include Mars, Nimrod, Cavatina, Silent Night, Hymn to the Fallen and popular songs from the home front and the trenches. The concert climaxes with a mass singing of Lest we Forget, a song written and co-composed by Mr Dawson.

Live Music at the Library of Birmingham. How to get involved.

I am contacting you all in my capacity as Head of Business Management at the Library of Birmingham.  The Library has outdoor spaces which we would like to have live music playing on, there is a 3rd floor terrace and an outdoor amphitheatre which the public can look down into from street level – both spaces lend themselves to music in the summer months.

We are open to all  genres of music, however artists will need to be very self-sufficient and provide their own amps etc

Bands could use the space on a Friday evening to 7pm, or over the weekend, daytime the library closes at 5pm on a Saturday and 4pm on a Sunday.

We will not charge for the space, however we will expect the artist to be self-sufficient and set up, with no help from the library.

If you have artists or music promoters who are interested in a free city centre venue – can you ask them to send an email to myself in the first instance, with a sample of their music.

R.I.P. Jo Dunne, former guitarist of “We’ve got a …FUZZBOX… and we’re gonna use it!!”

Dear all,

You may already be aware of the sad news that Jo Dunne, former guitarist of the all-girl band “We’ve got a …FUZZBOX… and we’re gonna use it!!” died of cancer on Friday night 26th October, just 43 years young. She passed away a month before her 44th birthday after a short 6 weeks’ battle against cancer.

Maggie, Jo’s sister and keyboard player in Fuzzbox has asked that I field some of the media activity, as she is helping to arrange the funeral and spending time with the family at this time.

Thank you to those of you who have sent us your kind messages of condolences, tributes in the press and radio plays of Fuzzbox songs, from indie anthems “Rules and Regulations” and “XX Sex” to chart hits “Pink Sunshine” and “International Rescue”.

Jo was very proud of the success the band and what we stood for. On finding out that we were (and are still) the UK’s most successful all-girl band (as opposed to vocal groups), we enjoyed a FAB reunion UK tour in 2010. (info attached). There will be a tribute event in aid of Cancer charities, but it is too soon to say what and when.

Jo will always be remembered as a cool, witty woman and a crackin’ guitarist! Continue reading
