Robin Valk will be leading The Music Network meeting once again on Thursday 26th April 2012 at Millennium Point, Birmingham.

The Meeting starts at 4pm and will finish at 5.30pm at Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham, B4 7XG. Anyone involved in Music in the region is welcome to attend, its free and there will be tea and coffee provided.

Robin is a broadcast and software consultant. He has been in radio for over 40 years, working on student radio, US Rock Radio, Commercial Radio and BBC Radio 2. When not consulting, teaching, podcasting or writing on radio and music, Robin works on radio and music projects – most recently, a documentary project on the music and musicians of Handsworth, Birmingham, and he’s leading the Pilot Project for the British Library.

Robin is one of the most experienced music programmers in Europe, working for RCS, makers of Selector, at their New York HQ for ten years. He offers consultancy in Selector and  P Squared’s AutoTrack / Myriad, for whom he is currently authoring online help, as well as other systems. Recent consult work has taken Robin to Southampton, Glasgow and Budapest. He is currently developing new ultra-low cost radio approaches for Internet radio streaming.

In recent months Robin has turned his attention to blogging more about local music and the stories he has uncovered. Destination Birmingham. Birmingham A Music City Scrutiny Report

In 2010 Birmingham’s Independent Music Industry was asked to answer 10 Questions.

In May 2011 UK Music published “Destination: Music” the first study of its kind to scope the economic contribution of music festivals and major concerts to tourism throughout the UK. After May 2011 Emma Williamson (Group Overview and Scrutiny Manager) & Baseema Begum (Research & Policy Officer) at the Scrutiny Office of Birmingham City Council got in touch. Emma & Baseema sent through several documents that asked a number of interesting questions. Rather than try to answer the questions on your behalf, The Music Network decided to pass the questions on to you direct.

Music and Birmingham’s Digital Cultural Future – Across Birmingham, new strategies are being developed that will look at the contribution music could make to the cultural and digital future of the city. Birmingham Music Network is leading an independent debate at this month’s Creative Networks event that will examine the issues, ask questions and challenge the preconceptions of the local music industry on what role music can play in this emerging landscape.

Birmingham City Council is currently researching issues surrounding the promotion of Birmingham as a music destination.  This debate is set to cover these issues and the wider areas of live music performance, music archive, the music industry and the support of the local scene.

Those taking part represent a wide array of opinion and experience, they include:

Robin Valk, long time a part of BRMB and developer of the Music Pilot Project (an archive that champions new local music);
Dr Paul Long, a reader in media and cultural history at BCU and the active presence behind many regional cultural archive projects;
Andy Derrick, an award winning professional performer, composer and music educator;
Abi Seabrook, a community and professional musician, also an active member and passionate advocate of the Musicians’ Union.

National Survey and Mapping Exercise assessing provision & scope of music support work across UK 2009

The UK Music Sector Forum (MSF) is a network of music support agencies with the aim of providing a vibrant forum for the discussion of issues affecting music support projects and workers across the UK. The MSF has been in operation since 2005.

This survey and resulting report aims to assess the provision and scope of music support work across the UK in 2009.

The objective was to generate a set quantitative data from practising music support organisations for feedback and discussion about the Forums role, in relation to the ongoing benefit to the sector and its community of workers and participants.

During the research process over 100 organisations were contacted with 81 of those completing the survey.

32 organisations were unable to participate in the survey because:

• Their remit delivered a broader arts programme of which the music component was negligible.
• They were no longer active; remit had changed or lacked funds.
• The survey results were collated before response.

The questions were designed to allow freedom of expression and they generated an exceptionally high number of critically productive comments. Multiple respondents’ choices were recorded, but ‘skipped questions’ and ‘no response’ were not and therefore bore no influence on the presented statistical outcomes.

Links to information on each organisation can be found in appendices along with details of forty four (44) unmapped organisations identified for future contact.

This was a fact-finding exercise to identify underlying trends; these have been identified and highlighted using graphic software and filter analysis. Each respondent’s additional critical comments are also printed after each result graphic to aid synthesis of the data.

Conclusion

This survey and resulting data aimed to identify and raise important issues directly and indirectly affecting key operators and stake holders in the music support and development sector. From the outset it became apparent that to take the clearest sector ‘snapshot’, all those practising organisations, departments and bodies would need to be indentified and connected with as participants in the online survey questionnaire.

The large number and variety of respondents has resulted in sector wide coverage generating a resulting selection of quantitative data that can be used to inform a decision making process.

I just wanted to alert you to some good news in our campaign on copyright term. The Commission has this morning announced proposals to extend copyright for sound recordings from 50 to 95 years. Making the announcement, Commissioner Charlie McCreevy said he no longer wanted performing artists to be the poor cousins of the music business.
