Joseph Arthur Birmingham Glee Club Fri 13th June 2008

June 12, 2008

The Market Tavern has closed, The Jug of Ale has gone but, the remaining venues and promoters in Birmingham are putting up a good fight to make the best music available at reasonable door prices.

Markus Sargeant and The Glee Club are yet another example of what is possible on a budget you can stick under a glass. Many years ago I gave Markus a tape of two Joseph Arthur albums and suggested he may be worth booking to play. Markus gave the tape a listen and promptly phoned the agent and booked Joseph Arthur to play. Ever since then, whenever Joseph has been in the Country Markus has given him a stage. It was also Markus that worked so hard to support David Gray when no one else could afford to give him a gig in the Midlands in the early 1990’s.

If you go to one gig this month, give Markus a break and go and see what he gets up to at The Glee Club, Joseph Arthur is a genius and Markus has brought him to Birmingham again. The Glee Club is an amazing music venue. Don’t Miss it.

JOSEPH ARTHUR TAKES OVER 2008 WITH FIVE NEW RELEASES

Four EP Series Unfolds With ‘Could We Survive’
(March 18th / Lonely Astronaut) and
‘Crazy Rain’ (April 15th)

Additional EPs in June and July

Full-length ‘Temporary People’
To Be Released September 16th

“One of our most emotionally revealing and
talented singer-songwriters” – Vanity Fair

This spring marks the return of maverick songsmith Joseph Arthur with the release of two EPs - the raw, atmospheric pop of ‘Could We Survive’ (March 18th / Lonely Astronaut), followed by the near-techno and wonderfully chaotic ‘Crazy Rain’ (April 15th). Arthur and his own label, Lonely Astronaut Records, will be releasing a series of four EPs this year, leading up to the full-length ‘Temporary People’ (September 16th). The final two will be available nationally June 10th and July 8th.

‘Could We Survive’ and ‘Crazy Rain’ are the follow-ups to Joseph’s two critically acclaimed full-length albums, both released in 2006 - ‘Let’s Just Be’ (“it’s a ride and it’s a good one” – NY Times) and ‘Nuclear Daydream,’ hailed by Paste Magazine as “endlessly ponderable and disturbingly beautiful.”

An acclaimed painter and Grammy-nominated visual artist, Joseph often creates his artwork while taking breaks during writing and recording. He has written, performed and produced nearly all of the music on these five albums and recorded most of the material in his newly opened Brooklyn art gallery, the Museum of Modern Arthur.

Catch Joseph Arthur at SXSW and on tour throughout the spring and summer, and visit his ongoing exhibition at the Museum of Modern Arthur, like you should.

‘Could We Survive’ track listing: 1) “Rages of Babylon,” 2) “Morning Cup,” 3) “Shadows of Lies,” 4) “Could We Survive,” 5) ”Walk Away,” 6) “King of the Pavement”

Joseph Arthur…

‘A driven, visionary character… he might just be a genuine mad genius’ Guardian

‘A talent worthy of taking seriously… a gripping spectacle’ Evening Standard

‘A song writing beacon ****’ Mojo

Joseph Arthur’s lyrics are charged with pure feelings that writhe uncomfortably beneath the tough skin of backstreet imagery and big city attitude. The music is disjointed, but it hangs together with a wired nonchalance; rhythms shuffle along, heads tucked into a world of their own as melodies surge and tumble around them. The guitar sounds like it’s had a pretty rough time and is on the verge of snapping, yet when Joseph’s voice expresses all over it, a frazzled beauty arises.

Love Music Hate Racism Carnival 2008

April 15, 2008

12-6pm, Sunday 27th April 2008
Victoria Park, London E3
www.lmhrcarnival.com

Its only two weeks to go until the 30th anniversary commemorative Rock Against Racism gig in Victoria Park, London. Taking place on 27th April, four days before the 1st May local and GLA elections, the carnival will bring together musicians and music fans from a wide variety of genres and different generations, celebrating black, white and asian unity.

Financial Appeal
We are making an URGENT appeal for financial donations! The Carnival is a free event, but is costing over £400,000 to stage (so that’s why festival tickets are so expensive!). The trade union movement in particular has been brilliant, helping raise much of the costs.  However. we still urgently need support from anyone who can afford to contribute - no matter how small the amount- we would like to raise a further £25,000 over the course of this week.  Please rush a personal donation to us if you can, either via the website www.lovemusichateracism.com/donate or by cheque (make payable to LMHR-RAR Carnival 2008 and send to Love Music Hate Racism, 231 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London SW1V 1EH) and ask family and friends to do the same. And please take the attached collection sheet round at work or your place of study.  If you belong to a trade union and haven’t already done so, please ask your union branch or region to make a donation - model resolution is at www.lmrhcarnival.com . The sort of fantastic music lineup we have would cost £50+ at a regular festival - and the Carnival will help smash racism and fascism into the bargain, so please dig deep!

Final Lineup Confirmation
The final lineup is now confirmed and its AWESOME! The Good The Bad The Queen (Damon Albarn from Blur, Paul Simonon from The Clash and afrobeat legend Tony Allen) will headline and Akala and The View have also recently been added to the bill. See below for the complete list of artists playing. This is going to be the biggest (and best!) anti-racist event in Britain for decades, possibly ever.

Read All About Us!
The media have caught on - the Observer Review section will carry a 4,500-word cover article the Sunday before and BBC One show Sunday Life want to do live interviews from the park on the morning of the event.  Don Letts’ and Giorgio Testi’s documentary/live film of the Carnival will be broadcast on Channel 4 at midnight on Friday 9th May, and broadcast across the MTV network from the following day. However we need more! Why not write to your local paper about coming to the Carnival?

They Came From Far And Wide
The mobilisation from across the country is looking impressive too - we know of at least 40 coaches booked, with thousands planning to come by car and train - and would like to urge more places to book a coach.  Anyone who can get down to the Carnival will be inspired to get active in the anti-fascist movement after the event, including the final run-up to May 1st.

The latest flyer is available here http://www.lovemusichateracism.com/images/lmhrC_A5w3_107_lo.pdf Please circulate this widely and let us know ASAP if you need more printed flyers and posters - anita@lovemusichateracism.com.  If you or someone you know is willing to volunteer as a steward on the day please email olivia@lovemusichateracismcom.

Stanley Brinks at The Jug of Ale, Moseley, Birmingham on march 14th 2008.

Stanley Brinks is the new identity of André Herman Düne, original member of the “Herman Düne” trio. StanleyBrinksBirmingham140308
Review: “Having toured and recorded all over under different guises ranging from Ben Dope to Klaus Bong to John Andreas, this former member of the French anti-Folk Herman Dune trio has done it again: step forward the now Berlin-based Stanley Brinks. New single ‘Fox Trot’ is dark and broody, lurching forward like the pissed fall guy in a 1950s crime caper; Brinks’ lyrics are exquisite, slowly painting his story with effortless flamboyance (“My father was a doctor but he played the guitar/On the day that you are born you know who you are”). He states his intentions: “The only thing I learnt was what no-one said to me/You better live now and stop getting ready.” The results could prove intriguing.”

Ticket Touting: Going, Going, Gone…?

March 7, 2008

From our man Peter Jenkinson: For as long as there have been restrictions on how many people can enjoy popular public performances, there have been individuals looking to make a quick buck from the disparity between supply and demand. The advent of the internet has however made it easier than ever before for third parties to derive huge profits from the resale of popular concert tickets, with concerns regarding consumer protection and the need for industry remuneration placing this issue firmly on the agenda for ’08.

Arriving hot on the heels of the government’s forthcoming response to January’s select committee report, this think tank will explore the conflicting viewpoints of managers, resale agents, promoters and the general public, asking whether effective self-regulation is desirable or even plausible in the murky world of secondary ticketing?
