MAXI PRIEST will be headlining The Flyover Show 2012. One of the most successful solo reggae artists of all time, ‘second only to Bob Marley’, MAXI PRIEST has released 10 albums since his debut, ‘Intentions’, in 1986.

MAXI PRIEST’s globally selling singles, such as ‘Wild World’, ‘Some Guys Have All the Luck’, ‘Close to You’ and ‘That Girl’ helped disseminate reggae roots around the world.

Janet Kay
Returning to The Flyover Show for its 2012 event, is reggae legend and ‘queen of lovers rock’, Janet Kay. Renowned for her seminal reggae track, ‘Silly Games’, Janet Kay is the first British Black Female reggae artist to top the UK British pop charts.

Wordsworth MC
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Wordsworth MC travels from the US to appear at The Flyover Show 2012. Part of ‘rap supergroup’ Emc – with Punchline, Stricklin & Masta Ace; Wordsworth has also featured on albums with Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Tribe Called Quest.

Wordsworth’s debut album, ‘Mirror Mirror’ was released in 2004; his latest, ‘The Photo Album’, was released in June 2012. Wordsworth was also involved in the critically acclaimed MTV comedy sketch series ‘Lyricist Lounge’.

Basil Gabbidon
Founding member of Birmingham born reggae group, Steel Pulse, Basil Gabbidon performs at The Flyover Show 2012. Currently touring his latest album, ‘Reggae Rockz’, the 3 time Grammy nominated Gabbidon is joined by Burning Spear bassist, Paul Beckford.

Walking distance from Birmingham City Centre, The Flyover Show 2012 can be accessed via four subway tunnels, feeding into the location from; Soho Rd, New John St, Great Hampton St and Heaton St.

Live music, graffiti art, break dancing, food and a host of activities for all ages will be taking place from 12noon until 9pm.

The Flyover Show remains, as it has always been, a free admission and family friendly event.

FLYOVER SHOW 2012 – Celebrating Jamaica

The Flyover Show 2012, “celebrates the cultural contributions of Jamaica to Britain throughout its programme”, says founder Soweto Kinch.

Artists performing at the event; alongside a preceding series of workshops held in schools across the city, will explore and represent Jamaica’s influence in the UK, “both historically and as a dynamic force in contemporary culture.”

The West Midlands has the second highest concentration of British Jamaicans in the UK, particularly in the areas that join at the Hockley Flyover, such as; Handsworth, Lozells and Aston.

Birmingham is also host to the Jamaican track and field 2012 Olympic team, who will be staying and training in the city before the games.

“Jamaica, much like its athletics team, has imparted a cultural phenomena and impact far beyond its relative size as an island,” says Kinch.

“The Flyover Show 2012 will explore, through a variety of platforms, how it (Jamaica) has provided a badge of identity in the face of racial marginalization.”

Previous shows have explored other pertinent issues of race and culture; including the portrayal of women in the music industry, and positive Black male role models.

“The Flyover Show 2012 intends to continue and extend its pattern of connecting different generations through its rostra,” concludes Kinch.

The Flyover Show was first held underneath the Hockley Flyover, Birmingham, in May 2008.

The Flyover Show has returned each year since 2008 at the same location.

John Mostyn – Managing Music Workshop, Birmingham

A few words from John Mostyn who will be running the Managing Music Workshop

“In 2006 Geoff Pearce and I ran a project called Managing Music. It had European Regional Development funding and ran for 18 months. It was for managers in the music industry or self managed artists. Each applicant joined us for 6 months attending a workshop on a weekly basis with individual mentoring in between. It was a great success. It was a joy to deliver because we were able to work with some of the best up-and-coming artists and managers in the area at the time. We even had a budget to spend on recording and promotion; delightfully Geoff and I were paid for delivering the project.

Everyone who came on the project agreed that it was more than worthwhile and I suppose the ultimate accolade was when Scott Matthews won the most prestigious Ivor Novello award for his song ‘Elusive’, the recording of which was partly funded by the project as both his manager and record label were participants in Managing Music. One of the strangest aspects of European Funding is that even if something is going really well it has to end and cannot be repeated.

As I look around the ever-changing music industry scene today I am recognising that there is absolutely nothing like what we did available in the area and should an aspiring manager or self managed artist wish to seek advice or mentoring there is nowhere for them to go (please tell me if I’m wrong). There may be University courses that teach certain aspects of the music industry but who has 3 years to spare and who can afford it?

I am currently being trained to be a professional mentor and I’m starting to wonder if the time has come for me to offer my skills and experience via paid one-to-one mentoring. Although the industry is changing so quickly there is still a lot to be learned from someone who has seen it go right lots of times, and of course wonderfully wrong and from someone who frankly isn’t too bad at sharing his knowledge and experiences.

I am going to hold a free workshop on Tuesday 3rd July 2012 to take a look at how people in Birmingham’s music history have made a successful living, and how those aspiring to do that now might also be able to achieve similar successes. I will share some of my stories and I would like aspiring managers and self-managed artists to come and share with me what they feel are the gaps in their knowledge that they are facing today. This initial workshop will help direct future Managing Music seminars.

Choirs join forces this month in Solihull in aid of poorly children

Two talented young choirs join forces this month in a musical extravaganza in Solihull in aid of poorly children.

Warwickshire Boys’ Choir, finalists in the BBC Choir of the Year 2010, will team up with Knabenchor Hoesel Boys’ Choir from Germany for the concert at the Bushell Hall, Solihull School, Warwick Road on 18 May at 7.30pm.

Choir leader and director of the Warwickshire County Music Service, Garry Jones, said: “These hugely talented and successful boys just love singing, and it promises to be a show not to be missed! The Warwickshire Boys have twice appeared in the final of the National Festival of Music for Youth at Symphony Hall where last year they won a major award, have toured Europe, produced two CDs and appeared on radio and TV and their German counterparts have also won awards.”

The 60 Warwickshire choristers, aged from 8-14, will raise their voices with the German choir in singing a variety of well known popular and classical hits.

Emma Hale, head of fundraising at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I really encourage people to come on down for what will be a really entertaining night.  Not only will you hear well known songs from across the ages but you’ll also be supporting vital work at our local Hospitals.”

Proceeds from concert ticket sales will go towards children’s care at Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals. To book, call 0121 424 3838. Tickets cost £5 each, £4 for concessions and £15 for a family ticket (two adults and two children).
