Birmingham Music Network Meeting Minutes – 28th March 2013

Attendance:

Apologies:

New Points…

Mark Badger – New releases on Iron Man Records to follow later this year. Releases will include a new album by Police Bastard, a brand new album by the last of the beatnik warrior poets: John Sinclair. Mark will also be working with Seasick Steve this year, Steve has a new album out on Fiction records called Hubcap Music.

Robin Valk – Campaign for Regional Broadcasting:
Robin wrote a blog piece about it. Robin details The collapse of the media sector in Birmingham.
912 million pounds of licence fee pays out from a population of 16 million in west midlands.
From that, the midlands gets anout 100 million back. That represents a spend of just £15 per licence payer.

By comparison Media City in Manchester has just opened.
What the campaign is all about….trying to keep it proportional….Midlands is suffering a catastrophic underspend.

Robin went to Houses of Parliament, talked to labour MPs, wrote to Andrew Mitchell his own MP.

For every pound the BBC spends, it generates £2 for the local economy
If you are oing to return funds to region, radio is a quick win and easy to do that.

BBC introducing is quite a useful thing for new bands. Tom Robinson leads the way with the BBC introducing show…..

suggestion to make better use of the BBC Introducing process

What does this mean for musicians? It means musicians are not getting any skills or support for music from BBC
