The Meeting will be lead this month by Mark Badger from 4pm til 6pm at Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham, B4 7XG

The Music Network, Birmingham, 2008

The Music Network organises a NETWORKING EVENT on the last Thursday of each month, for the benefit of music related businesses in the West Midlands region. If you have any involvement in music, come and talk about what you’re up to and meet some new people. These Networking events are about all things music in the region. They’re about helping you to teach yourself how to do it, by yourself, for yourself and encourages you to share the knowledge with others so they can do the same.  If you are a musician, a student, someone who works with musicians, represents musicians, has involvement with the music industry, or are looking to make new contacts…..the meeting will be useful.

If you have news to report, a presentation to give, an event to promote, any new points for discussion, a pitch to make, business cards or flyers to hand round, an appeal for help, advice or guidance or even if you just want the free tea and biscuits and some serious discussion…you are invited.

You can also post in by email any news or gig dates or press release information for inclusion on the website and for distribution through the mailing list and RSS feed. More details on the website.

There will be luxury chocolate biscuits and good coffee for all. There’s food and drink afterwards supplied by the creative networks too. Please pass this invite on to Musicians you know or anyone else who you think may benefit.

THURSDAY 24 JUNE 18:00 BAFTA AND CREATIVE NETWORKS PRESENT – DOCUMENTARY FOCUS

June 16, 2010 in Networking, News, Other by Mark Badger

Birmingham City University, Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham, West Midlands B4 7XG

4pm The Music Network Meeting

6pm Registration and refreshments

7pm Event starts

An evening with BAFTA-winning director Jessie Versluys and assistant producer Kate Collier on the making of Katie: My Beautiful Face.

Katie was young and beautiful. A model and budding TV presenter, the 24-year-old had a glowing future ahead of her. But in 2008 a vicious acid attack destroyed her face, and with it her career and her life as she knew it.

Join BAFTA and Creative Networks to hear how director Jessie and assistant producer Kate worked with Katie to bring her incredibly moving story to the screen. From commissioning and production through to the editing process, Jessie will elucidate the struggles both she and Katie faced in the making of this documentary and explain how they captured Katie’s truly amazing spirit and humour as she began to rebuild her life with her new appearance. Breakthrough talent BAFTA winner Jessie will also offer indispensible advice to budding filmmakers on how to approach sensitive subjects for the screen.

The event will be interspersed with clips from the Channel Four Cutting Edge production Katie: My Beautiful Face, courtesy of Mentorn Media.

Jessie Versluys is a freelance Producer/ Director. Jessie has a background in both factual entertainment and documentary, directing on a range of programmes from The Apprentice and Secret Millionaire to the critically acclaimed The Hospital (A and E) which revealed the plight of the busy staff on a typical NHS emergency wing. Jessie worked her way up the ladder until she got a break directing on a Channel 4 first-time directors’ scheme run through Ricochet. After making her first 30 minute documentary about a vulnerable prolific young offender she went on to make her first 60 minute documentary, Into The Big Wide World – a touching and well received film about care leavers and the extraordinary difficulties they face. She is technically trained and has self-shot many of her programmes.

To join us for this FREE event, please email creative.networks@bcu.ac.uk or call Dave Taylor on 0121 331 5400.

  • Devil In the Detail – The Nightingales (Single, 2005)
This is The Nightingales flexing their muscles, going for an almost Pistols-like power, whilst Robert Lloyd adopts an almost Iggy-like drawl on top of it all. My Single of 2005.

Rocket Pool Via Rough Hills – The Nightingales (Out Of True LP, 2006)
Silver Machine-like noises over an Eddie Cochran riff and a beat to die for from their then new drummer Daren Garrett. Wonderful stuff!

  • Music Supported Here is a new movement from the Musicians’ Union.
It’s a campaign for all musicians.

It’s about the simple but important principle that musicians should
not get ripped-off in the digital world.

For musicians, it will be a way to publicise and debate the issue
and to remind fans that you want to control your rights.

It’s a platform for musicians to raise their profile and direct their fans to
their own stores and websites: a source of music controlled by the musicians.

And for music fans it’s a way to say that you don’t rip-off musicians.

By supporting musicians' rights, we’re supporting music.

  • The new Life in A Blender site now includes a storefront where you can buy all the band's music, in physical or digital form.

Check out the rarities on Mysterious Floating. Songs you never thought or wished existed–now you can own them!

You can also stream the entire catalog in case you like to try before you buy. Our music is available at iTunes, Amazon, etc, but directly from our website is the… best deal for you and for us, so come on by.

Visit the site often for news about shows and exclusive goodies. For instance, right now we're giving away a FREE (or pay-what-you-wish) download of a brand-new recording, HOOT OWL, from our forthcoming full-length album.

Buy some stuff and you'll play a mighty role in helping us finish our new CD and you'll be awesome!!

The site was designed by Mark Lerner, Life in a Blender's bassist.

Andy Derrick on why Birmingham Music Network should be funded by A.W.M.

June 14, 2010 in News, Other, Strategy by Mark Badger

Andy Derrick has written an interesting piece on why Birmingham Music Network should be funded by AWM.

Andy starts by saying “I have the great pleasure of frequently attending and sometimes chairing the Birmingham Music Network. For those of you that don’t know, the BMN meets on the last Thursday of each month inside the TEE, a faculty of Birmingham City University at Millennium Point, Curzon Street, Birmingham.

The network also has a dynamic online presence here: http://birminghammusicnetwork.com

It was set up by Mark Sampson and Anthony Hughes some time ago and is run on a voluntary basis. It meets an average of 20 people each month providing advice, support and a place to meet others and make good contacts. Businesses represented include sound engineers, singers, songwriters, radio dj’s, studio owners, performers, music students, media consultant, venue owners, gig promoters and everyone from across the music industry spectrum in the West Midlands.

The website and the network are vital parts of the local music scene, in my opinion, but it could do more. Imagine a world where the website is continuously updated by a team of dedicated experts, where less time was spent finding a sponsor for some tea and coffee and more on promoting the meetings to the people that need them, where there was a budget to advertise effectively, where the volunteers were paid a modest amount to cover their time and expenses. Imagine what could be achieved.  It could be achieved with some financial support.”

  • Manchester’s number one budget Splitter bus hire company. We have a wide range of vehicles to suit most needs for the transportation of bands in E.U and beyond.

Starting with 9-14 seater splitter bus with DVD, flat screens, game consoles, etc. All our vehicles come with high quality leather recliners and very secure back line space.

We have trailers to suit all our vehicles.

  • I have a weird relationship with Last Under The Sun. I love the idea, the lyrics and artwork, but have never found them an easy listen.

Considering most of them are in Police Bastard they are much more melodic than you’d expect, but over the years their sense of melody and the superbly-crafty songs have slowly, but surely grown on me.

The vocals do not make the listening experience any easier. They hold an almost spoken word quality about them that breaks into a shout on songs such as Summers Day and, again, they may take a while to grow on you.

  • A fiver for a new Police Bastard EP and DVD which clocks in at well over an hour is a bargain you really can’t do without. The fact it’s released as a tribute to Trogg, who used to play bass for the band, but sadly died in 2008 is another reason, should you need one, to part with your ill-gotten cash.

The third reason is it’s bastard good.

The five-track CD contains a Mob cover (I Wish), which I much prefer to the original (never really got into The Mob), the fucking awesome hardcore punk of God Off and the infectious riff of The Lie. Before this week, Poundaflesh and Slipknot’s Iowa CD were my “pissed off” albums – you know those CDs you play to exorcise all that pent up brutality and fury, now there’s a third CD to add to the list!

I guess, for those who haven’t heard the band, Poundaflesh isn’t a bad reference point – those and Doom will do, if you must have lazy comparisons.

It’s fucking well produced and tight as fuck too.

  • Born out of Leuven-Belgium’s activist squatting scene in 2004, Cop On Fire have been putting up festive foundations of pumping drums and sub-bass dub supporting their local scene. Local in this case is as global as a good part of Europe as C.O.F. toured between Scotland and Slovakia, though never playing Kortessem. Consisting of 4 people who have a heart for dub, ska, punk and protest-songs alike, C.O.F. uses these influences to recreate feelings from daily life: sticking it to The Man, taking a stand for Mother Earth, opening the bin for bigoted morality and xenophobia of all kinds…Oh, and we don’t like cops. Reclaim The Streets, opening autonomous social centres, Antifascist Action, sustainable living, … action backed up by the flow of drum and bass, a guitar crossing musical boundaries all thrown in a mix of effects and echoes from the underbelly of society – the samples. DIY has been more than a label to the band as we've played just about anywhere
